CITIZEN ALERT v1.208
FEINGOLD-REID AMENDMENT

This morning I called Sen. Feinstein's office to make sure she was voting for the Feingold-Reid Amendment. She did. Yeah!

The Feingold-Reid plan immediately moves troops into protection, training and counterterrorism missions. It also enforces a March 2008 deadline to end the war by cutting off funds for military operations not carrying out those missions on April 1, 2008. There are something like 400,000 Iraqi security forces now. That's more troops than the first Generals requested to initially invade Iraq. It's time to finish their training and get back on track, i.e. finding Bin Laden in Pakistan.

JERRY FALWELL

Jerry Falwell passed on today into his next stage. Hopefully, he'll get to hang out with people EXACTLY like him, that think like him, look EXACTLY like him and talk about all the same things he likes to talk about so he can finally be happy.

Sometimes, I just felt a little guilty that the rest of us were screwing up Jerry's world for him, leaving him to live out a miserable earth bound existence.

Jerry ran the Moral Majority back in the 80s, an organization bent on turning back the clock so that we all resembled black and white TV in the 50s. His organization influenced politics for some time but first and foremost the Republican party. A lot of people would say Falwell created the far right.

What's ridiculous about the far right - REPUBS mainly - not MM peeps, is they talked incessantly about privatizing this and privatizing that, EXCEPT when it comes to religion. THAT they want wedged in everywhere they can get it; schools, government, your job, your home, media, the world.

I could never understand why they didn't just want to keep that private as well. Seems like it would be keeping in line with their platform.

CITIZEN ALERT v1.206
MOTHER'S DAY PROCLAMATION

The original Mother's Day Proclamation was made in 1870. Written by Julia Ward Howe, perhaps best known today for having written the words to "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" in 1862 when she was an anti-slavery activist, the original Proclamation was an impassioned call for peace and disarmament. In the years following the Civil War her political activism increased, as did her condemnation of war. Here are the words to the original Mother's Day Proclamation:

"Arise then, women of this day! Arise all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be of water or of tears!

"Say firmly: 'We will not have questions decided by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us reeking of carnage for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy, and patience. We women of one country will be too tender to those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with our own, it says "Disarm! Disarm!" The sword of murder is not the balance of justice. Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession.'

"As men have forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each bearing after his time the sacred impress not of Caesar, but of God.

"In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace."

CITIZEN ALERT v1.205
RED ALERT

From Moveon.org:

This afternoon the House is going to vote on their latest plan for Iraq. We received word late last night that there could be a vote today on an amendment that would call for a mandatory withdrawal from Iraq by early 2008—the strongest attempt to end the war we've seen come to the floor of this Congress. At the same time, Republicans are trying to strip out any measures that hold the president accountable on the war.
The majority of America is on the side of the Democratic congress. You have to put pressure on your representative so they know they can be as tough with Bush as they have to without feeling like YOU think they are not supporting the troops.

CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE NOW. IT TAKES 15 SECONDS. Moveon.org probably has a search engine you that can help you find their number or just go to house.gov.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"...a government is a living organism. Like every living thing its prime characteristic is the instinct to survive. You hit it, it fights back."
