QUICK CHENEY PRIMER
The whole story that is going down with Cheney right now for those of you that need a quick catch-me-up. Here's the story in a very brief nutshell.
The Office of the Vice President (OVP) is supposed to submit an annual report on all the material it has classified and declassified.
The Federation of American Scientist noted that the OVP hadn't done that since 2003. They had just stopped. So they filed a complaint with Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO), the executive branch organization that oversees the national security classification system.
When the ISOO told Cheney's office he'd have to comply. Cheney proposed ABOLISHING THE ENTIRE ISOO DEPARTMENT!! WTF!!?
Luckily there's oversight for that, and Cheney's neat idea was rejected by a review group.
Now, Cheney claims that his Vice PRESIDENTIAL office is neither part of the Executive Branch or the Legislative Branch and doesn't have to comply with the ISOO's orders of releasing what they are doing. Apparently, Cheney is just a completely different part of the government that no one else even knew existed!
ISOO Director J. William Leonard asked the Attorney General in January 2007 to render an interpretation that would resolve the dispute. Alberto has not responded. Imagine that!
